Satellite earth station comprehensive network management system typical case


一、Background
To ensure the safety broadcast of radio and TV programs, to normalize the operation security of broadcasting earth stations, every broadcasting earth station is required to establish security management system and M&C system, according to ‘Technical Requirement on Satellite Earth Stations Acceptance’ No.47, Official Files (2008) issued by SARFT., and ‘National Broadcast Security Requirement’. Following such a trend, Prodigy successfully launched the professional Monitor & Control system - Vector Design Software for Monitor & Control System (VMC), which especially highlights the distinctive features of satellite TV broadcast.

二、Brief Introduction
VMC is a software solution featured by flexible vector design, back platform driven as well as adding ,deleting or modifying monitoring equipments as needed. VMC is now a widely accepted software that has been working for broadcast earth stations all around China.
The types of equipments managed by VMC include: satellite communication equipment (signal source equipment, baseband equipment, uplink equipment, etc.), power systems (UPS, diesel generators, power distribution cabinets, etc.), environment systems (temperature, humidity, precision air conditioning, general air conditioning, etc.).
VMC is a standardized commercial product, low cost and high reliable.

三、Structure and Design

The framework of VMC:
               

Easy to expand: data collected from distributed areas and controlled in the center. VMC can set up a unified database management for quantities of equipment and distributed areas through data collecting servers.
Decentralized data collection and centralized Monitor & Control: VMC collects equipments’ parameters and status in distributed areas and sends them into central collection server, achieving centralized monitor and control for distributed equipments and places.
The local monitor terminals of VMC central system can show all data and status according to system or equipment room’s location. For example, Local Monitor Terminal 1 displays for SDTV monitor, and Local Monitor Terminal 2 for HDTV monitor; or, Local Monitor Terminal 1 displays for old equipment room, and Local Monitor Terminal 2 for new equipment room.
VMC is based on TCP / IP protocol. The central collection server exchanges data with all equipments by IP stream, with protocol conversion modules to convert data from equipments of non-TCP / IP protocol.

四、System Modules
Monitor Center
Monitor center consists of Local Collection Server and Local Monitor Terminals. Local Collection Server gathers all real-time data and alarm information within VMC and Local Monitor Terminals are responsible to respond to all events in VMC.
Local Collection Server connects with Protocol Conversion Modules through IP network and the communication is via TCP / IP protocol in master-slave way, to obtain real-time data of all equipments. Service mode of VMC guarantees real-time feature and simultaneous communication with all equipments guarantees immediate response to any event.
Local Monitor Terminals is fully designed with GUI. They can monitor and control every equipment involved in its certain interface in an organized way through data exchange with Local Collection Server.
On-site Monitor Unit
On-site Monitor Unit allocates a Protocol Conversion Module for each equipment with non-TCP/IP protocol, to realize IP stream communication in the network. On-site Monitor Unit transfers instructions from Monitor Center through Protocol Conversion Modules to equipments and then feed back to Monitor Center along the same channel, such realizing monitor and control of operation status of equipments.
Remote Client Terminal
Operators or Managers can monitor all data in VMC at Remote Client Terminal through intranet.

五、Functions

1. VMC provides GUI design tool and plenty of sub graphs and graphic primitives. Operators can design elegant HMI according to actual requirement, defining font, shape, color and sound by themselves.

2. All management operations for the entire network can be done in one single interface.

3. VMC dynamically displays the status of the whole network by graphics.

4. VMC provides different kinds of Alarm methods and strategies. It can send alarm or failure data to operators or managers by multimedia animation, voice, live sound and light, SMS, voice calls, e-mails to realize automatic local / remote alarm.

5. Data Collection Servers are allocated according to equipment location and room location, data collected from distributed areas and controlled in the center. VMC sets up a unified database management for quantities of equipment and distributed areas through Data Collecting Servers and thus can be extended easily.

6. Based on parameters, status, failures and operation data collected in VMC, operators can get failure analysis report and expert diagnostic suggestion by inquiring, analyzing, filtering and listing functions.

7. Managers can monitor users the operation status at any monitor point in VMC via WAN or LAN.

8. VMC can improve the system reliability by automatic fault location and fast recovery response.

9. Multi-level operation and management for high security in VMC allows different security level defined for different devices and different operators locally or remotely.

10. Isolation or switching over of VMCs never influences formal broadcast and normal operation, all done with transmission on air. It is compatible with various monitoring platforms and equipments by different manufacturers.
