IDC Digital Cinema Distribution


一、Background
Digital movies are movies captured, post-produced, stored and projected by digital technology. It is a significant revolution compared to traditional film movies. Because the content of movies is in the form of data, the distribution can be either by delivering physical hard disk, CD-ROM, or through transmission link such as satellite, fiber and other high-speed transmission connections.
Satellite transmission features low initial investment, fast construction speed, little correlation between operation cost and user number. If the user number exceeds a certain figure, distribution by satellite channel is the fastest, safest and the most efficient choice. Nowadays, most of the major movie operators are distributing their digital movies via satellite.
Digital Movie Distribution System via Satellite is data broadcast system by one uplink and multi downlink with real-time monitor and control. The characteristic of digital movie distribution allows uni-cast, group-cast and broadcast. It allows different content requirement from different receiving station, while monitoring transmission status in real time and resending or recovering error data or lost data.
Digital Movie Distribution System via Satellite can meet the various demands of city and village cinemas, such as 0.8k village cinema, 1.3k commercial cinema, and 2/4k Cineplex. Meanwhile, it can support HD/3D live broadcast service.

二、 Proposal

System configuration:
       

The system consists of three parts: Distribution Center, Uplink Earth Station and receiving stations, with DCP files (movie data packages) and other relevant data (such as license keys of movies). All the data is sent in IP format through DVB-S2 transmission channel from Distribution Center to all receiving stations. The number of the receiving stations is up to 5000.
Distribution Center is responsible for data generation, distribution and management, Uplink Earth Station takes care of data transmission, while receiving stations are capable to receive data, to request resending and to recover files transmitted.

The core of Distribution Center is data generation, distribution and management, which includes:
Distribution Manager
Distribution Manager is control software customized for end users’ workflow. It provides the interface of operation and control for all the other software. The functions includes: 
 · Formulate and publish the movie transmission notice
 · Collect subscription data and schedule transmission time table
 · System status monitor and alarm notification
 · User management, log management and resource management
Datacast XD
Datacast XD provides IP-based file distribution. It includes a XD Host server in the center and client terminals in the remote sites. XD client terminal is fully integrated in the SFX receiver.
Remote client terminal
Operators can monitor real time data of equipment at remote client terminal through intranet.
Datacast XD delivers files (video, audio and data) securely and reliably. The main features are:provides all functions for secure, reliable distribution of files, the main features include:

 · File integrity verification and correction
 · support return link
 · File delivery Log including file delivery confirmation

Net Manager
Net Manager provides management of remote receivers. When there is ground terrestrial links, monitoring data will be transmitted via ground terrestrial links; when ground terrestrial links do not exist, in that case, Net Manager will perform the blind control to equipment in remote sites via the satellite link.
Network management software can control the configurations of either a single receiver, or a group of receivers, or the entire network receivers. The receiver's on-site software upgrades can be achieved by Net manager.
IP Encapsulator 4000
IP Encapsulator 4000 exchanges the IP packet into DVB-compliant MPEG TS stream. The equipment has a different transfer rate model, the maximum transfer rate of up to 200Mbps.
Though the control of TCP / IP input flow can effectively optimize the transmission efficiency. Therefore, establishing a TCP / IP management connection between Datacast XD and IPE4000, you can ensure IPE4000 the data buffer is always full which makes sure to use transmission bandwidth with the greatest efficiency.

Chinese user interface, task-oriented operation guide, and flexible configuration of various parameters, including the functions put up with in requirement that when the missing package can be transferred by satellite or by ground can be accomplished by configuring the solution.

In addition, the system has:
 · no limit in document size, depends only on the capacity of hard drive;
 · in system, the transmission capacity of contend distribution is up to 70Mbps;
 · The return link between remote sites and distribution centers can be various types of IP links (including dial-up connection), but the best is always online and has more than 512K speed IP link. This ensures real-time monitoring system to the equipment status of remote sites, offer confirmation of successful reception of files, the request of missing package ,and resend the file package.
